Taipei Times: Environmentalists take aim at nuclear industry

People in a busy shopping district in Taipei yesterday afternoon had a shock when they saw what looked like Taiwan Power Co (Taipower) employees in full protective suits moving a yellow barrel with a radiation hazard sign and the words “radioactive waste” on it.

In reality, it was a skit by environmentalists to raise public awareness of the dangers of nuclear energy.

  1. YAY! I'd much rather have my nuclear waste dumped without regulation or monitoring like the coal industry does with coal fly ash, which contains high level radioactive waste in the form of uranium and thorium (betcha didn't know that was an ingredient in coal which gets concentrated when you burn it, huh?). The arsenic, mercury, lead, smog, and acid rain from burning coal are just a bonus in addition to the nuclear waste it produces! It strikes me as strange that since there HAVE been coal fly ash spills that have made their way into homes and schools why people haven't focused on this much more immediate and dangerous threat? I guess the answer is hypocrisy and blind ideology. If your curious, there have been TONS of scientific and peer reviewed articles about the nuclear waste content of coal... Take a look some time and think for yourself.
